Redwood Virtual

What can you do with an LVS from Redwood Virtual?

A LVS can be used for so many things. This page lists a few ideas which you can try out. You can play with many of the services listed below using our $10 per month account - very economical for those of you with special needs yet slim pocketbooks.

Java Hosting

Use Redwood Virtual as a sandbox for your Java programming. Customers are currently using services such as Tomcat, Jetty, and JBoss.

Hosting in General

If Java isn't your thing or if you're thinking of trying something other than Apache, then this is also the perfect place. You can keep a cheap account around just for quick experimentation purposes. One of our goals is to provide environments in which customers can learn about new and existing technologies.

Say you're all washed up with the PHP/Mysql combo. Perhaps you'd like to try your hand at another programming paradigm. Check these out:

Complete Control Over Your Email

Consolidate all your email in one place, run them through tougher anti-spam software like spamassassin or procmail and access them via IMAP, POP, or a web-based interface like SquirrelMail. You can even draw your email from hotmail accounts using Hotway. Software for other free web-based mail accounts is also readily available.

Proxies and Tunneling

Redwood Virtual LVSes are perfect for protecting your privacy and freeing yourself from overbearing sysadmins. If you would like to surf the web quickly and anonymously, set up a web cache or proxy of some kind. We've had good experience with Squid. You can connect to your proxy via SSL and surf the web free from the prying eyes of anyone on your network.

If you find yourself behind a restrictive firewall, you can pierce it by using one of our LVSes as a step to the outside world. A good tunneling program to start with is HTTPtunnel.

IRC Usage

We have no doubt that you are tired of the needless restrictions imposed by shell account providers on background processes and the like. Redwood Virtualaccounts have not such restriction. Our accounts are great for running IRC servers, bots like eggdrop or darkbot, and IRC bouncers like dircproxy (our personal favorite) or ezbounce.

Other chat protocols or gateways can also be used. Sometimes a private chat server best suits the needs of your friends or coworkers. Check out Jabber, ICB, and Bitlbee.

A Catchall for Your Organization

Redwood Virtual accounts are great for people looking to host various services for small organizations. Say you need a server for your local charitable organization. You can host a website and an intranet, provide email accounts for members, and set up mailing lists using mailing list managers such as Majordomo or Mailman.

And speaking of intranets, our accounts are ideal for hosting Wikis, content management systems, and online forums. Check out the following:
